A peace-loving writer in WWI-era Paris, Paul Verin ghostwrites brilliant editorials that make politician Henri Dumont a rising star. When arms dealers pressure Dumont to push a pro-war agenda, Paul refuses to compromise. Dumont retaliates, using his influence to send Paul to the front lines and to pursue his wife, Adele, at home. Soon, greed and betrayal push Paul dangerously past his limit.
