Father Peter Williams, an American exorcist, hides a shocking secret: possessed by a demon he was trying to expel, he committed a terrible sacrilege. To atone for this sin, Peter devotes his life to charity work in a small town in Mexico. Middle-of-the road exorcism with abundant special effects, utilizing sound to cover up the lack of ideas to generate dread, and a frantic chase that belongs more to zombie cinema.

Recreating the lamplight poster shot from The Exorcist, Hildalgo doesn’t exactly disguise who he is in thrall to – though his film is to William Friedkin’s classic what hair metal was to Led Zeppelin.

Does The Exorcism of God work? Thats between the viewer and his Lord, but its definitely, well, something.

The Exorcism of God strains in its attempt to unpack the legacy of Catholicism and missionaries in Mexico.
