M. Night Shyamalan writes and directs a haunting new thriller--Lady in the Water. From the creator of The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village comes this eerie tale of modest apartment building manager Cleveland Howard (Paul Giamatti--The Ant Bully, Sideways) and the mysterious, beautiful young woman named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard--The Village) whom he rescues. But when Cleveland and the tenants of his building discover that this fragile, ethereal woman is being pursued by deadly creatures as she tries to return to the realm of literary imagination to which she belongs, they begin to realize that their "real" world may not be as real as they believe.
Rotten Tomatoes® Score
Critics Consensus: A far-fetched story with little suspense and unconvincing scenarios, Lady In The Water feels contrived, pretentious, and rather silly.

What was [Shyamalan] thinking? This isn't just duff, it's career-threatening catastrophic.

despite the childlike nature of the story, Lady in the Water will prove too confusing for most kid...

Common Sense Says
More soggy than scary. Still, not for youngsters.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that the movie features a fierce dog-like creature most often indicated by shadows or red lights (his eyes). His attacks (he crashes through glass, drags off a girl, and kills a character) are rendered in quick cuts, hectic camera movements, and victims' screams. The creature is eventually ripped apart by monkey-like creatures in another dark, loud, and chaotic scene. The film includes a couple of jump scenes. A few characters smoke cigarettes.
