Groucho Marx portrays celebrated African explorer Capt. Spaulding, who's just returned to the states to inflict comic carnage on the highfalutin party of society matron Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont), regaling guests with tales of his adventures in the wild ("I shot an elephant in my pajamas; how he got there I'll never know" and so on). Amidst the mayhem, the Marx Brothers also perform several memorable musical numbers.

Curiously, for a Marx Brothers comedy, this one is a touch overstuffed, with time added to sing an extra song or two, or for Chico to play more than one composition on the piano (Harpo gets to strum the harp, of course, which is requisite).

Animal Crackers is an improvement on The Cocoanuts with The Marx Brothers bringing the funny in a way that only they can.

This and The Cocoanuts squeak by on the top-notch comedy quotient.

One laughs with this movie as much as one did twenty years ago. The extraordinary sequences of the bridge party and Harpo’s arrival are as irresistible as they used to be.
