It would take a miracle for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team to win the pennant. But when a young girl prays for just such a miracle, her beloved team begins to win--and she believes it's being helped by Angels in the Outfield! Young Bridgit White's (Donna Corcoran) prayers are answered when the Archangel Gabriel tells combative Pirates manager Guffy McGovern (Paul Douglas) that miracles will begin to happen if McGovern forswears his swearing. Now, in what seems a miracle, the Pirates begin to win--but McGovern's life only becomes more complicated when a newspaper reporter overhears Bridgit claiming she sees the heavenly forms of former baseball greats helping the Pirates in this delightful classic.

Cute baseball fantasy overshadowed by remake.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that there is a main character notorious for his brawling and profanity; the filmmakers under the old studio censorship code got around that by having his "filthy" tirades scrambled by the sound effects department into a mushy babble. You can't make out a word. It's actually pretty funny, maybe more so than hearing the real obscenities. Also know that this is not the 1994 Disney remake of the baseball comedy filled with ethereal special effects, but rather the less fancy original black-and-white version, which leaves the angels invisible throughout.
