[Neeson]’s trapped once again in tired tough guy material, bringing gravity to a film that’s already dragging him — and the audience — down.

With decent, but too infrequent, action and a great leading performance, Absolution is certainly a step up from the other stuff that Neeson’s been doing, but that’s not saying all too much.

An overlong and dramatically undernourished work that tries for a little bit to be more than just a run-of-the-mill Neeson action extravaganza before eventually becoming just that.

[Neeson] is an undeniably stoic presence and often broods, bringing out an inner conflict that makes this character compelling—a key element in a story filled with revenge, grief, and personal redemption.

It’s a scrappy, flawed little movie, but watching Neeson sink his teeth into the character is a rare treat these days.
