Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood stars as a not-very-smart Phoenix cop assigned to a mission that his boss does not expect him to survive. The job seems simple: escort a witness from Las Vegas to Phoenix to testify at a mob trial. But his charge, beautiful, college-educated prostitute Gus Mally (Sondra Locke), cannot convince officer Ben Shockley (Eastwood) that the police intend to kill them both--until the bullets start to fly. Now the only way for the pair to survive both the cops and the mob is for Ben to deliver Gus alive to the trial in Phoenix.

…while not quite as thunderously epic as that poster suggests, The Gauntlet is some peak Eastwood machismo, all the better because it sets the star against a smart, angry female character…

Eastwood... blurs the line between law enforcement and the way the Mob conducts its business to provide extra food for thought in a compelling and well-paced tale.

The subject is the redemption of the pop hero, and Eastwood accomplishes his purgation with wit, intelligence, and a complete disregard for the prevailing standards of realism.

There's too little action to let Eastwood show himself to advantage as the fine, stylized screen fighter he is. Instead, there's talk and psychology, which he can handle only by gritting his teeth.

The Eastwood formula is predictable but fun; thin plot, lots of action and heroic stoicism above all.
