Kogonada continues to wrestle with the doubts that come with our memories of regret and chances we never took and here does it within a wistful and moving fantasy that is less about romance but rather discovering that we deserve love and happiness.

The premise might have viewers buckling up for a journey to a magical destination, but when the movie veers sharply into metaphorical and then idles in literal, sparkles of hope get left in the dust.

It isn’t hard to believe that A Big Bold Beautiful Journey wants to be that for its romance-starved audience. Kogonada indeed strives for it, and he just about ekes out a success, thanks to some, frankly, Herculean heavy lifting.
