In one of the most stunningly designed movies from Hollywood's golden age, Michael Curtiz directs the historical drama of Elizabeth I's love for the Earl of Essex, which threatens to destroy her kingdom. Bette Davis and Errol Flynn lead a star-studded cast, including Olivia de Havilland, Vincent Price, Nanette Fabares, and Leo G. Carroll. After Elizabeth chooses to marry Essex and relinquish her throne, she realizes that his plans for advancement would ultimately prove disastrous for England. When afforded the opportunity to execute Essex for treason, she reluctantly signs his death warrant, but minutes before his final walk to the chopping block, Elizabeth begs him to ask for a pardon. But Essex, fully aware that his warlike policies will only resurface if he is permitted to live, refuses to accept the Queen's mercy and goes off to meet his doom.
