In "The Model and the Marriage Broker, 20th Century-Fox has given Thelma Ritter her biggest and best role, a comedy role faintly touched with pathos, and the popular comedienne is even funnier than you expect.

Many chuckles as well as some touching and warm moments are provided by this romantic comedy-drama... The direction and acting are first-rate.

Miss Ratter is a natural for a role such as this. She's warm, she's funny, she's extremely likable and a very shrewd actress who knows how to give any scene just the right touch.

As usual, it is Miss Ritter who runs away with the show, particularly when she is able to get free of the undertow. Her wisedup air, her cynicism disguising a heart of gold, her barrel-house voice, her sudden radiance have never been better employed.
