The slave trade has returned, and John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) travels to Africa to end this evil enterprise. In Ethiopia, the native New Yorker is trained by the beautiful Aleme (Vonetta McGee) on how to pass as a native. But once he's captured by the slavers, the bullets and bodies fly fast and furious at the hands of Shaft in Africa.

Although most of the action in Stirling Silliphant’s screenplay seems to have been manufactured by computer, it at least moves swiftly and with a shrewdly cynical understanding of what its audiences will want.

It's quite a merry progress, with Frank Finlay doing one of his outrageous cinematic villains... If I thought the movie was serious for a moment I'd find it rather retrograde.

The latest M.G.M. John Shaft thriller is about as effective as yesterday's bowl of oatmeal.

Shaft in Africa takes detective John Shaft to Ethiopia for some fast-paced exploits as he tracks down the leader of a slave trade gang in much the best of the Shaft pictures.
