To see or not to see? Do, because one flawed Shakespearean adaptation does not lessen Hosoda’s stature as an animation force.

Neither Scarlet or Hijiri are developed or entertaining enough characters to sell the raging heartfelt emotions Hosada has successfully pulled off before.

A wildly disorienting film that frequently stumbles under the weight of its own ambition, leaving the viewer more frustrated by its ultimate practises rather than genuinely enthralled.

Mamoru Hosoda’s continuing experiments with animation are passable enough. But it’s not enough to uplift this loose adaptation of a literary classic with its rather clumsy thesis on cycles of violence.
