Shipwrecked sailor Edward Parker is stranded on a tropical island inhabited by Dr. Moreau, a scientist who conducts brutal experiments to transform animals into partial humans. Parker's attempt to escape the island is thwarted by Dr. Moreau's cadre of beasts and by the scientist's desire to use the sailor in one of his experiments.

Charles Laughton, whose next film (The Private Life of Henry VIII) would earn him a Best Actor Oscar, is pure purring menace as Dr. Moreau.

Shot almost entirely within the studio, from ships in misty water tanks to a densely-fabricated jungle, it suggests the primitive and the perverse, a feral world as claustrophobic as it is intimidating.

If The Island of Lost Souls is also a little too silly for words, i.e., if it fails to achieve anything but "horror," that is something against which you should be warned.

What it presents is more ugly and revolting than horrifying.
