Rich kid Kelley Morse (Chris Klein) has it all – money, good looks and a new Mercedes. But after a reckless car race, he’s sentenced to a summer of manual labor in a small town, where he falls for a girl from the other side of the tracks (Leelee Sobieski). Things soon change again when her long-time boyfriend (Josh Hartnett) finds out about the romance in this sweet tale of first love.

Critics Consensus: Critics say Here on Earth's weakness comes from its script. The story may appeal to young teenage girls, but it suffers from being overly sentimental and formulaic. The cinematography, however, is lovely in how it captures its Minnesota setting.

What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that the female lead of Here on Earth dies of cancer; even if it's obvious emotional manipulation, it can still be upsetting, especially if a teen has dealt with, or fears, loss. They should also be aware that there's plenty of teenage sexuality here, starting with crude jokes about body parts that fit in car tailpipes and what to do with handcuffs. While nothing explicit is shown, the two leads spend the night together, waking up in bed.
