Jacob (Anton Yelchin) returns to his desolate hometown and discovers that his child-like brother, Buddy (Chris Marquette) is working for a notorious gang. The gang’s ruthless boss (Vincent O’Onofrio) has exploited Buddy’s simple mind and manipulated him into becoming a merciless killer. Jacob realizes the only way to save Buddy is to take down the gang from within. Broken Horses is a gritty, epic thriller about bonds of brotherhood, laws of loyalty, and the futility of violence.

The performances are mediocre, with D'Onofrio coming across as comically theatrical. Yelchin as Jakey is comatose.

[It] has a couple of effective scenes of coiled-up tension and suitably moody chiaroscuro work by cinematographer Tim Stern, but it always feels like a very early draft of the story that eventually became Chopra's professional zenith.

It's hard to tell if the film is an unfunny joke or an earnest failure, but ham-fisted symbolism and sloppy plotting rule regardless.

Despite the solid performances by the cast, it's an overwrought story that is more bleak than beautiful.
