River Phoenix and Lili Taylor star in a bittersweet story about losing innocence and discovering love. In November 1963, four young marines in San Francisco celebrate their last night before leaving to fight in Vietnam with a "dogfight," a competition in which the man who brings the ugliest date wins. Handsome Eddie Birdlace (Phoenix) convinces Rose(Taylor) to accompany him on a date--but he doesn't tell her she is part of the dogfight. Despite the pain he causes, Eddie discovers the last thing he expects ... love.

A tender, bittersweet film with one of the most poignant endings of all time.

The jolt is in the intricate expressivity Savoca brings to the story, with a repertoire of precise and painterly images that highlight performances of assertive yet graceful physicality.

A film about affection for fermatas in time and the artifice of unreliable memory clouding the painful steps that led us there. "Dogfight" knows the comforts & charades of romance are sometimes the same & doesn't cheat its way to an easy resolution.

While not a perfect film (its ending is touching but painfully abrupt and unresolved), Savoca's first movie since her breakthrough True Love reveals her as a director with more stories to tell in her feeling personal way.
