Despite its strong cast and other cine pleasures, including a soundtrack stoking rebellion, there is a journalistic distance to it all, including the visceral lure of the open road that attracted its poster-boy to a bikie gang in the first place

What begins as an expression of rebellion against the conformity of mainstream American society, with Cream’s I Feel Free playing as the guys zoom along on their bikes, will gradually degenerate into sordid criminality.

Whatever the film’s faults it is a compelling, even empathetic film that remains afloat thanks to its terrific performances and electric pacing.

You get the sense that it wants to be a mid-century Fight Club where men with Not Much try to create something for themselves, an ideology or worldview. But what that is, the movie never makes clear, or even really implies.
