Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders delights in its cadre of rugged bikers and the dramas that come from their riding club. Yet, the joy of the film comes from seeing this world through Kathy (Jodie Comer), the wife of renegade rider Benny (Austin Butler).

The sheer exuberance of the story and the stylistic brio of Jeff Nichols’s direction often compensate for the film’s lack of authenticity.

Writer-director Jeff Nichols shapes this material into a strongly involving exploration of masculinity and identity, allowing the sharply drawn characters to exist in remarkable complexity, free from pushy narrative demands.

The Bikeriders is a shallow parade of cool images.

Nichols' rebellious but romanticized film richly encapsulates a zeitgeist of by-gone male belonging and the lengths take to gain acceptance. With an assured cast and some newcomers this is another triumph for the director.
