Pee-wee's Big Adventure is spun out of childish delight and childish malice.

For me the film was like a nightmare that left an indelible impression of Pee-wee Herman himself, simpering, mincing, smiling his tight little smile, eternally hopeful. But the action itself remains a total blank.

The film is funniest at the beginning.
