Cary Grant and Myna Loy star in this classic screwball comedy about a big city executive who wants to find a simpler life in the country when Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House. Advertising executive Jim Blandings (Grant--Charade, North by Northwest) learns about rural life, real estate and construction the hardest way possible when he buys a farm in Connecticut and moves with his tolerant if not understanding wife, Muriel (Loy--Thin Man films), to a decaying shack that's closer to a nightmare than the house of his dreams.

Old pros Cary Grant and Myrna Loy are effortlessly splendid in their third and final on-screen coupling, leaving the director HC Potter to basically twiddle his thumbs.

It’s quite fortunate that Grant and Loy are such an amusing onscreen couple, and that the script is overflowing with humorous dialogue.

A better director would certainly make Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse a stronger comedy but it's still a solid watch over 70 years later.

It's occasionally too bland for its own good, but Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House succeeds on the strength of its trio of stars and their delivery of some biting quips.

This lightly sweetened tale is still remarkably meaty.
