I would rather a film like this try and fail rather than not try at all, and Digger certainly tries, even if much of it can sadly be described as a failure.

El antepenúltimo mohicano

Raúl Álvarez

For if it is a bad idea to write and shoot a satire devoid of nuance, it is even worse to tell the audience what to think and how to react to what they see on screen. [Full Review in Spanish]

Digger may be sold as a mainstream movie, but it’s very much an arthouse feature. Cruise delivers a fearless, bizarre and wildly entertaining performance that may be the biggest acting swing of his career.

The Establishing Shot

Jeff York

It’s a noteworthy attempt, a frequently hilarious farce, and a cryptic warning about the dangers of climate change. Unfortunately, it mostly uses a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel.

Swinging wildly between positive moments and passages that fall short to land just north of the middle ground, Digger is far from a masterpiece but never awful for very long.

The fact that it will likely generate strong responses – positively or negatively – is a testament to its effectiveness.

Outrageous, over the top, sometimes downright hilarious and definitely bizarre, DIGGER affords Tom Cruise an opportunity to remind everyone that he is more than just an action figure.

There is an incredible surprise twist at the end of the movie that I doubt anyone will see coming.

Iñárritu turns climate catastrophe into a wild satire of ego, power, and storytelling. Tom Cruise is terrific in an unexpected role, while the film’s excesses and uneven ideas make it as fascinating.

It has a few moments featuring Tom Cruise’s lead performance, but overall, I find the movie boring, morally simplistic, a meta-fictional satire that lectures me for two long hours on the climate crisis and crony capitalism. [Full review in Spanish]
