Academy Award winner Elizabeth Taylor stars with Richard Burton in this enduring romance of a beautiful, independent artist who refuses to lead a conventional life ... and who proves irresistible to the local Episcopalian minister. In a spectacularly beautiful artist's community in California's Big Sur, Artist Laura Reynolds (Taylor) has chosen to raise her teenage son herself rather than marry the boy's father--and to teach him at home with her own unorthodox values. But when the state gives Reynolds an ultimatum to enroll her son in school, she opts for an academy run by minister and headmaster Dr. Edward Hewitt (Burton). Now, these two very different people become irresistibly attracted to each other, leading to an affair between the Bohemian Reynolds and the married minister.

[A] jamboree of tastelessness, pretentiousness and unadulterated idiocy with a cynicism and venality that are indeed something to behold.

Both stars perform with fire -- Liz in untrammeled style, Richard with a repressed air.

The people involved in The Sandpiper manufactured a motion picture -- they didn't rob a bank. So what's the crime? The crime is that a truly great actor has indeed danced to the tune of petty pipers.

The Sandpiper, another vehicle for the irresistible combination of Burton-and-Taylor, has magnificent Big Sur scenery and a script that might have been hilarious and just isn't, but not much else.

It's not only that the story, which look five writers working on different levels with different credits to compound, is phony from beginning to end, but the character Miss Taylor is obliged to portray defies belief.
