Locked in a high-tech English manor, bound in a deadly duel of wits, Andrew Wyke (Caine) and Milo Tindle (Law) come together as English gentlemen to discuss the matter of Wyke's wife: the woman both are sleeping with. But as wit becomes wicked and clever becomes cutthroat, Wyke and Tindle's game of one-upmanship spirals out of control, in an escalating chess match that can have only one outcome: murder.

This is a capably envisioned picture, one of the few worthy remakes based on a classic.

Even without comparisons to previous iterations, it's difficult to appreciate the ludicrous twist that Branagh has inserted into this remake's final act.

Branagh shrewdly stages much of the escalating second-act violence by having the men violate each other's personal space.

While Caine is, without any doubt, absolutely the best thing in this Sleuth, as the film is entirely without purpose, so is his performance.
