A young woman on a New York-bound train witnesses a murder outside her compartment window. With a passion for mystery novels and the help of a mystery writer, she sets out to solve the case after police dismiss her story. Disguised in the victim's mansion, she uncovers a conspiracy linked to a victim's will, while narrowly escaping a deadly plot and exposing the truth.

Deanna Durbin [is] caught at that awkward stage when Universal seemed to have no idea what to do with the rapidly maturing girl who had been the studio's biggest star in the 30s.

Lady on a Train sets out to elicit chills and chuckles, but never quite reaches its modest destination.
