It has its moments, but not enough to be noteworthy.

While Honey Don’t! prods at something new and quite poignant, an idea about how survivors see themselves and that loaded word “victimhood”, it ultimately struggles to make much sense out of itself and its oddball cast.

What remains here are the bursts of violence that, despite being brilliantly structured, aren't tolerated by all audiences, but which, unlike the carnal instances, still manage to remain relevant to the plot's evolution. [Full review in Spanish]

But the film’s self-aware, queered-up take on noir cliches ultimately amounts to nothing like momentum. Trashy stories need plots and character development, too.

The film plays like zany black comedy, all gormless faces and Looney Tunes violence. What story there is, though, springs from childhood domestic abuse. The result is exactly as jarring at it sounds.

A giant apathetic shrug of a movie that doesn’t even seem interested in recapturing that idiosyncratic Coen energy, let alone actually delivering something that will capture a modicum of the viewer’s interest.

While the joyously unabashed queerness and delicious production details along with Qualley and Evans all-in performances are undeniably cool and effective, all I can say is honey just wait, and stream this one.

The director throws a lot of dead bodies in the air but doesn’t land them in a convincing storytelling way.

It’s a wild-and-wooly, ludicrous tale, a self-aware exercise in style which winds its bemusedly hard-edged mystery around a core that mirrors both the cynicism and the romance of its hard-boiled neo-noir inspirations.
