Academy Award winner Paul Newman stars with Hollywood legends Lauren Bacall, Janet Leigh and Julie Harris as the tough guy Los Angeles private detective Lew Harper. Down on his luck and almost broke, Harper (Newman--Road to Perdition) takes a job finding the missing husband of Elaine Sampson (Bacall--Birth). But what should be a simple case takes Harper on a downward spiral through the dark side of the entertainment capital. The screenplay by Academy Award winner William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men) was based on Ross MacDonald's novel The Moving Target.

Seen now, “Harper” feels like a transitional film, airing out the old gumshoe picture cliches one more time, and adding the cliches of all private eye movies to come — the “car with character,” among them.

Harper sounded promising -- Paul Newman in an attempt to recapture the Bogart private-eye world of The Big Sleep, with its spoiled people and overripe Southern California civilization. But it’s a despicably incompetent attempt.

Harper can be dismissed as just another private-eye story... But we'd rather hold on to it as a return to a classic -- a triumphant return to something that's been missing from the screen, something for grown-ups by grown-ups.

Wildly enjoyable.

The Drowning Pool plods along while Harper's pacing has a lot more momentum. Harper is hip and The Drowning Pool takes itself too seriously.
