Successful attorney Mark (Lee Pace) returns to his old house after the renters skipped out on rent. While there he experiences a supernatural event that forces him to reach out to his ex-wife (Carrie Coon). Ten years after their son's death, a ghost will help reunite the estranged couple and deliver a message of life or death.

Those who take a chance will be treated to a pensive, slow-moving story told almost as a play might be - mostly in one location, around three actors, forgoing style and punch to instead mine the depths of the human soul.

The film is a moving and emotional journey, and even manages a jump scare or two for healthy measure.

Conventional, sentimental ghost story rescued by beautiful performances and a couple of honestly-earned jolts.

The Keeping Hours is a hauntingly beautiful film that leaves a lasting impression.

Where the film falls short, at times, is in Pace and Coon's representation of grieving and renewal. Whether it's an issue in the dialogue or direction, the actors struggle to break outside the same emotional quadrant.
