Director Robert Benton, on only his third film, does a spectacular job of piling powerful scene upon powerful scene. The result is a succession of one-two punches that repeatedly knock the wind out of us.

The movies have given us scores of courtroom dramas; Kramer vs. Kramer is one of the few that draw real blood.

In writer-director Robert Benton's hands, it becomes something more: a coruscating tragedy, an agonizing search for values, and a story that's as convincing a testimony to the drama of ordinary lives as any I know.

This is a rare and moving film about marriage, divorce, child custody, and changing sex roles. It is also a film above love.

Though the characters fall into stock categories as indicated above, they are portrayed with such sensitivity and depth by the excellent cast that they come across as thoroughly believable individuals.
