When Barnabus Collins arrives at Collinwood estate in New England, his resemblance to a portrait of the Barnabus Collins who fled to England 100 years ago, after the mysterious death of his fiancée, amazes everyone in the extended Collins family. But wonder soon turns to horror as Barnabus' return transforms the estate into a House of Dark Shadows. The Collins family members are too slow to realize that Barnabus (Jonathan Frid) is the same man--or vampire--who left a century before ... and that their governess' (Kathryn Leigh Scott) resemblance to Barnabus' long-dead love may doom them all to haunt the earth as the undead feeding off the blood of the living.
