Sinners is loaded — thematically, visually, sonically. It’s a horror film, a Southern-fried period drama, a cultural allegory, and a supernatural showdown wrapped in blues-soaked atmosphere. Ryan Coogler stirs it all with purpose.

Packed full of rich cinematography, an intricate backstory, affable characters, and enough tension to have audiences on the edge of their cinema seats, Sinners is one of the best horror films of the year, but one of the best films full stop.

There’s so much thematic material to unpack here, but the film’s primary strength is in its exploration of music as a healer, as a seducer, as a uniter, and as a generational bridge.

While it draws upon influences from horror movies from the past, it still manages to shine uniquely by incorporating history, music, and the Black Southern Gothic aesthetic.
