Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse headline this musical comedy about a Hollywood star who returns to the Broadway theater when no producer wants him for a movie. Egos clash between the movie star, his lithe ballerina co-star and their effete director--and the show bombs in out-of-town tryouts. But the initial failure convinces the stars to work together, re-creating the musical to entertain their audience rather than satisfy their own artistic desires ... and they produce a Broadway hit.

Though the sets and locales for the first few numbers are engaging, the songs themselves are largely minimal and forgettable.

Director Vincente Minnelli's and MGM's great "backstage" movie musical, under the guidance of producer Arthur Freed, was satirically self-mocking, and also took shots at show business and those who were involved in musical-dance productions.

Its song-and-dance numbers (also featuring Cyd Charisse, Jack Buchanan and Nanette Fabray) are first-rate, and the script's mickey-taking humour is urbane.

Manic Minnelli, which isn't always for me.

Widely considered one of the greatest movie musicals of all time, Vincent Minnelli's "The Band Wagon" connects a jumble of comedic backstage Broadway shenanigans with mix-matched show tunes via Fred Astaire's impeccable dance routines.
