Academy Award winner Henry Fonda stars in director Alfred Hitchcock's real-life thriller of an innocent man trapped as the victim of a heartless criminal justice system--even though he's The Wrong Man. When an eyewitness to a robbery identifies musician Christopher Balestrero (Fonda) as the culprit, Balestrero cannot prove where he was on the day of the crime. Now, the wheels of justice--driven by the testimony of witnesses--mercilessly grind away the life of a man who looks remarkably like the real thief.

With each shot, each transition, each composition, Hitchcock does the only thing possible for the rather paradoxical but compelling reason that he could do anything he liked. "Che sera, sera," because What Will Be Has Been.

[O]ne of the master's must overlooked offerings. . . . But Henry Fonda's performance as the accused and our own current events keep this Wrong Man very pertinent. (Be aware the studios forced a happy coda onto the feature.)

In its efforts to be comprehensive about the proceedings, educating audiences who might not know the ins and outs of a run-in with the law, the pacing isn't always tight.

Director Alfred Hitchcock forsakes his usual shivers-and-giggles formula to produce a piece of glum honest realism closely based on an actual case.

A sullen drama from the first scene until the last, anchored by rather sincere performances and conveyed in the sorts of shadows and silence that were the staples of mainstream film noir.
