Even before Boundaries' tired plot grinds into motion, your patience may already be worn thin by the introduction of only the first of its many grating characters.

Boundaries may not exactly cross any new ones. Yet, it still works as a piece of heartfelt escapism thanks to its simplistic storyline.

It isn't that Boundaries is a long movie, not at all. It's that every moment feels like a quirky, twee cliché, straining so hard to be cute and never feeling remotely authentic.

The father's chicanery is the brightest spot in a screenplay that makes the heroine a shrill stooge for everyone else's agenda as the protagonists bicker their way to self-discovery and mutual regard.

Writer-director Chloé Robichaud films in purposefully icy grays, but the film falls victim to its own drabness. Her characters are barely more than archetypes.
