Watchmen: Chapter 1, WB's animated adaptation of the classic Alan Moore graphic novel, stays true to its source material, for better or worse.

It meets expectations and that’s about it, as is the M.O. of DC’s direct-to-video animated films.

Despite the fundamental problems with any Watchmen adaptation, and the serviceable but not entirely effective visual aesthetic, Chapter 1 does a respectable job of retelling this story.

Watchmen Chapter 1 was clearly a labor love for its creators. But while the impressive animated film avoids some of the pitfalls of prior adaptations, it also ends up revealing a few of its own in the process.
