While the subtext remains solid, the story proper is decidedly more ragged.

A brilliant first half that pits science against faith, and conformity against daring, collapses into a predictably punitive conclusion. John Ford's final film only gets a passing glimpse at the promise of combining the progressive and the transgressive.
