Academy Award winner Robert Donat stars as idealistic young Dr. Andrew Manson, who opens a practice in a small Scottish mining town. The doctor wages a much-needed battle against the lung disease that ravages the miners and against the poverty in which he and his wife live until accepting a lucrative medical practice in London.

A.J. Cronin’s 1937 novel is justifiably famous for helping inspire the creation of the U.K.’s National Health Service in 1947, and it probably didn’t hurt the cause that this 1938 adaptation was a critical and commercial success.

Altogether, this is one of the season's most interesting films.
