In Texas, years before the events of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriffs' daughter dead. Ten years later, he kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with 3 other inmates. Pursued by authorities including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter's death, the young Sawyer teen goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster known now as Leatherface.

Critics Consensus: Leatherface may wear the skin of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, but it proves gutless as an origin story and finds little invention in the horror tropes it's cannibalizing.

Manages to bring in the extremely unpleasant, unrelenting energy of the New French Extremity horror movement into the United States mostly intact.

For all the buildup for the big reveal, the ending of Leatherface makes little sense and isn't terribly satisfying, for hardcore fans or otherwise.

Most egregiously, it attempts to chart a rational evolution of an incomprehensible monster.

What's best is that beneath the horror are questions of identity. The origins of the character are changed, just a touch. The core remains the same. The saw's still family.
