But there’s perhaps too much going on, with themes of gender transformation, crime, unrequited love, political corruption and a spider woman who kills. It can make the leaps back and forth into the differing landscapes exhausting.

The film is great, bristling with ideas and hard-won epiphanies.

Here is a film that tries everything and commits to nothing. Condon and his cast give it loads, but the finished product is slow, watery and tonally uneven.

Every time we switch to song-and-dance numbers as an escape, it’s like being force-fed spoonfuls of sugary dessert while we’re trying to savour an intense, bitter main course.
