Martin Sheen and Moira Kelly star in the true tale of a courageous woman with a checkered past who becomes one of the most influential human rights activists of the 20th century. In the 1920s, an era when political and social mores dictate a woman's role in society, affluent newspaper reporter Dorothy Day (Kelly) pursues a life as a radical feminist, Marxist and hedonist. After passionate love affairs, an abortion and a child born out of wedlock, Dorothy struggles to find purpose in her life until she meets her mentor, itinerant French philosopher Peter Maurin (Sheen)--who teaches her to embrace poverty and dedicate her life to serving others.
