Co-director / star Lily Rabe offers fleeting flashes of compelling complexities. But too much of the rest of "Downtown Owl" will have you wanting to escape this place along with most of the locals.

It’s a testament to the integrity of this likable, modest indie that it leaves us wanting to spend just a little bit more time these people and find out what happens next.

...the mostly-engaging film is still worth seeing, and is anchored by a daring, unhinged, beguiling turn by Rabe as a new teacher who arrives in the small town of Owl, North Dakota, in 1983, to get away from her unfulfilling life.

Downtown Owl won't be for everyone although fans of Chuck Klosterman might be among the viewers that are the most curious to check it out.
