Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.

It’s a testament to the integrity of this likable, modest indie that it leaves us wanting to spend just a little bit more time these people and find out what happens next.

...the mostly-engaging film is still worth seeing, and is anchored by a daring, unhinged, beguiling turn by Rabe as a new teacher who arrives in the small town of Owl, North Dakota, in 1983, to get away from her unfulfilling life.

Downtown Owl won't be for everyone although fans of Chuck Klosterman might be among the viewers that are the most curious to check it out.

The movie adaptation of Chuck Klosterman's novel is a missed opportunity made up of scattered pieces with no clear vision.

No thought [is] given to retaining the cogency or shade of Klosterman’s text... Ultimately, then, Downtown Owl fails to register as anything more than a muddled assemblage of underlined passages.
