Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr star in a heart-warming romance as big as the Australian Outback--The Sundowners. Australia, 1920s. Ida Carmody (Kerr) loves her husband, Paddy (Mitchum), and Paddy loves the wandering life traveling the wide-open Outback as a sheep drover. Ida and their son, Sean (Michael Anderson), long to settle down on a ranch of their own. But no ranch can ever be big enough to hold hard-drinking, hard-gambling Paddy, no matter his intentions. And Ida should know that forced to choose between the home she yearns for and a wanderlust life with Paddy, she will follow her heart ... and her husband.

This serves as an effective rebuke to critics of Kerr who claim that she was only capable of playing ladylike, aristocratic types.

“The Sundowners” does run a tad too long, and there is an occasional lull or two. The absence of a more defined plot may be an issue for some as well. But the movie does a great job of selling its characters and drawing us to them.

The Sundowners carries leisureliness to a point where it becomes self-defeating. There is not nearly enough in the film that has to be there, and far too much that is there merely to hold the straying eye.

The Sundowners, directed by Fred Zinnemann, is a good film to take the kiddies to and I mean this as a compliment.

An extremely attractive view of Australian life in a story about a drover who re fuses to settle down and his wife and son who want to.
