Barbra Streisand stars as struggling singer becomes a star but loses the man she loves--who will not allow himself to hinder her rise to fame once A Star is Born. In this film based on the Academy Award-winning 1937 and 1955 films, the career of hopeful, young singer Esther Hoffman (Streisand) is launched by fading rock star John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson), who also wins the young singer's heart. Hoffman becomes a leading lady on stage and in Howard's life, but as Howard's career flounders, he sinks into an abyss of alcohol and cocaine. Hoffman chooses to sacrifice her stardom to care for Howard, but he will not allow her to abandon her dreams.

Streisand has more talent than she knows what to do with, and the heart of a lion. But she's made a movie about the unassuming, unaffected person she wants us to think she is, and the image is so truthless she can't play it.

For all its faults, I enjoyed A Star is Born. It's a chemistry experiment, and the chemistry -- between the stars -- is good.

... In a way this lavish epic could be titled Funny Girl meets Rock 'N' Roll.

Get the old message, girls, and in pounding stereo -- you still can't have a career and a man. Not that your man will actively hold you back -- he'll just destroy himself in protest.

Only required if you're crazy for Streisand.
