This hilarious comedy is about a pair of con artist who try to swindle Channing out of her family fortune. Soon Channing discovers that both mens' interest in her is more financial than romantic. The two scoundrels mount several inept attempts to murder her but ultimately discover that the real treasure is not the money but the girl.

The movie remains essential viewing for Tinseltown completists, and there are some smart set pieces from the director Mike Nichols, including a slapstick traffic jam on a midnight bridge.

Brisk and occasionally loud, the script never quite hits the funnybone and the players can’t compensate for that.

The Fortune slowly-but-surely begins to peter out once it progresses into its distressingly meandering midsection...
