In Disney and Pixar’s animated comedy adventure Hoppers, animal lover Mabel (voice of Piper Curda) seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to “hop” her consciousness into a lifelike robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals. As she uncovers mysteries in the animal world beyond anything she could have imagined, Mabel befriends charismatic beaver, King George (voice of Bobby Moynihan), and must rally the entire animal kingdom to face a major, imminent, human threat: smooth-talking local mayor Jerry Generazzo (voice of Jon Hamm). The all-star voice ensemble also features Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco and Meryl Streep. Hoppers is directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews.

Before it lets the air out of itself, Hoppers is frequently hilarious.

The movie, in actuality, is refreshingly mordant about what might really happen if prey and predators were to try banding together: Their efforts would immediately devolve into a despairing, even political quagmire.

Some likeable characters, a decent amount of good jokes, and a creatively affective lesson make this a solid recommendation.

Part-eco-warrior fantasy, part-love letter to the good in people, part-animals-go-wild comedy, Hoppers has a lot to say, which it says in between manic bursts of hyperactive insanity. In other words, it's exactly the kind of film that Pixar does so well.

"Hoppers," directed by Daniel Chong and with a screenplay from Jesse Andrews, is ... the wackiest movie to come out of Pixar lately – and that strangeness is all to its credit.
