Academy Award winner James Cagney stars as a boxer on the rise, but one who falls before taking a City for Conquest. It seems as though nothing can stop boxer Danny Kenny's (Cagney--Yankee Doodle Dandy) meteoric rise to the top. But when a gangster convinces another fighter to put acid on his gloves, Kenny leaves the ring blind. And when he tries to avenge himself, the now-sightless fighter leaves a brawl crippled by the gangster he has come to kill. Then Kenny's girlfriend, Peggy Nash (Ann Sheridan--Kings Row, The Opposite Sex), leaves him for Murray Burns (Academy Award winner Anthony Quinn--Alexis Zorbas). Kenny is left scratching out a life by working at a newsstand owned by his former manager. Yet he manages to scrape together enough money to send his kid brother to music school. And after years that have been hard on both Kenny and Nash, Peggy Nash returns just in time to hear Kenny's brother's first symphony on the radio.
