Esterhazy’s direction is consistently flat and uninspired given the nonstop opportunities for twisted weirdness, but the failure of The Banana Splits Movie can be pinned almost entirely on the sawdust-packed script…

I feel like it was such a missed opportunity in this film not to go completely zany, over-the-top, kooky.

Slasher comedy-horror isn't a kid-friendly reboot.

There are not enough laughs to be scary and the scares are too feeble to be effective, but a few gory kills save the pic from landing in Dullsville, USA.

Yes, it's silly. Yes, the acting is bad. However, in an era of some of the best, most dread inducing horror we have ever had, sometimes it's next to throw ourselves back to a 90's horror camp era and just enjoy the kills.
