Academy Award winner Spencer Tracy stars as John Macreedy, a World WarII veteran trying to find the father of the man who saved his life in this classic, taut drama about the evils of racial bigotry. Macreedy arrives one hot afternoon in 1945 aboard the first train to stop in Black Rock in three years. His search for a Japanese American farmer--to whose son he owes his life--leads to this small Western town's closely guarded secret ... a racially motivated murder ... and to the local citizens who will kill again to keep their crime hidden.

The first thing that really impresses on the viewer of Black Rock is the unsettling level of menace.

Few sights in this world are as beautiful as watching rednecks get their comeuppance, and Spencer Tracy’s stubborn vet is determined to take care of business in this tight (81 minutes) thriller.

The skill of some sequences, the mood and symbiosis between man and nature makes this film sometimes superior to High Noon by Fred Zinnemann.

John Sturges's mise-en-scene is careful to expand to the dimensions of CinemaScope... Bad Day at Black Rock is not, however, a masterpiece; it is at best a sympathetic film, well done, that is sometimes engaging.

As a noir-tinged Western hybrid, the film is a classic character study, morality play, and adventurous mystery.
