Sometimes leaving a story in the hands of the audience falls flat but in Z for Zachariah, the up-in-the-air twists and turns creates room for profound reflection.

The film comes across like a porch rocker served with a virgin Arnold Palmer and not a stiff cocktail of mental games or cat-and-mouse posturing for dominance and survival.

Zobel's deliberate pacing is meant to highlight the all-important subtext of the story but occasionally feels more like foot dragging than a style choice.

Paradise has been poisoned. Z for Zachariah deftly makes the argument that perhaps that is what has to happen for humans to thrive.

Beautifully acted and shot, it's a chamber drama that vividly captures desperation and loneliness.
