Ling certainly isn’t afraid to lean into Rocky-ier elements that follow, piling on the montages and even borrowing Bill Conti’s famous theme. But amongst the soaring strings and slo-mo-a-go-go of the fights, there’s also definitely a sense of déjà vu.

Here is an underdog heroine to champion. Her uplifting flab-to-fit dramedy is heartfelt and sympathetic.

Jia Ling excels in a familiar but entertaining and poignant comedy-drama.

YOLO is undoubtedly inspired by the first Rocky movie, but this is no Rocky ripoff. The movie has some unexpected moments amid some predictability, along with heartfelt drama and a notable transformative performance from writer/director/star Jia Ling.
