J.R. is a typical Italian-American on the streets of New York. When he gets involved with a local girl, he decides to get married and settle down, but when he learns that she was once raped, he cannot handle it. More explicitly linked with Catholic guilt that Scorsese's later work, we see what happens to J.R. when his religious guilt catches up with him.

A stunning, if raggedy, feature debut from Martin Scorsese...

Their sad sexual experiments reveal that their aggressively male society and exaggerated codes of loyalty are really defensive.

I can't, at a second view, see much to commend, except for neat technical execution of an ambitious construction which contrasts, by cutting to a fro, a young man's romantic love for a girl a bit beyond him, and the sordid background of his life.

Of obvious interest to fans of Scorsese and Keitel.
