Venom tried something new in a familiar world of pop culture. The foundation built on fleshing out Brock’s character and motivations made it stand on its own as canon.

Pacing issues aside, Venom establishes the quirky Brock-Venom dynamic perfectly. A fun setup that hints at the chaos to come without overdoing it.

This origin story is chaotic noise and CGI, but still Tom Hardy's portrayal of both the self-righteous journalist Eddie Brock and the violent alien who invades his body as Venom intrigues.

Admittedly, the movie’s not great—it’s replete with clichés and breaks the ridiculous meter like it’s crumbling a biscuit. But it would be unfair to criticize a film that uses them to its unabashed advantage.
